When looking for any item these days being a car, pair of jeans, a grill to cook steaks on and even a pair of cowboy boots, people like to search for a truthful and honest review that will give them the information they need to make an educated and informed choice. Here at We Heart Handmade Boots, we have done just that and have written some of the best cowboy boot reviews all in one place.
When it comes to questions like “Who makes the best cowboy boots?” or “What are the best brands of cowboy boots?” that is kind of a sticky topic. Boots fit different people in different ways, so when someone gives you their opinion on their favorite brand, take it with a grain of salt. It is just their opinion and you need to realize a certain brand might fit them great and the same pair might not fit you in the same way. Same thing if they give you a poor opinion on a brand of boots. The same pair might fit you great and they might give you a poor review on that particular brand of boots. Just keep that in mind.
What To Look For In A Pair Of Cowboy Boots
First off, you are obviously looking for a good boot review. No need to worry or spend your time reading a bad one. There are a couple of things you need to look for when it comes to finding a good pair of cowboy boots. Actually 3 things and they are the following:
- A Goodyear welt is a must in a pair of cowboy boots for the simple reason that you will be able to resole them. If your boots do not have a Goodyear welt or a welt or an easy way for the sole to be replaced easily by a cobbler, that basically kills the life of your boots. Without this welt, you boot life expectancy just went from 20 years to 2 years. Definitely make sure you have this welt
- Cowhide leather lined boots is a must in my opinion. I definitely prefer cowhide leather lined boots over cloth boots that some brands use. This will greatly help with stink lol. For the most part, a cowhide leather lined boot just doesn’t stink as much when you’re done wearing them at the end of the day compared to a cloth lined or hybrid material.
- Boots that have been “Hand lasted” which is stretching the leather by hand across the “last” which looks kind of like a foot and give the boot it’s shape. Hand lasted is how traditional cowboy boots are made. This helps with getting out wrinkles or impurities that machine lasted just cannot do because every piece of leather is different.
As I mentioned earlier, each brand is going to fit people differently and this has a lot to do with the process companies like Lucchese, Tony Lama, Rios of Mercedes, etc… make their boots. Each one of these companies use a different last which is going to effect the final outcome of their cowboy boots.
This is why it’s important to go to a boot retailer and try on several different brands to see what fits you the best. If you already have done this, then you are good to go. If buying online, you want to make sure you buy from someone that has a free exchange / return policy with their boots.
For example, Pinto Ranch allows you to return a pair for free if you to need to change the size or maybe you just don’t like how they feel and you want to try another brand. They will then ship you (for free) another size or allow you to try another pair.

Best Rated Cowboy Boots / Best Cowboy Boot Brands
The title of this paragraph might be a little confusing because I really can’t answer on which is the best rated cowboy boot or which brand of cowboy boots is the best. At least I can’t answer for you because as I stated earlier, everyone is different and different brands fit people differently lol. If you want to, head on over and check out our post on the Top 10 best brands of cowboy boots.
As for best rated cowboy boots, that is practically impossible in my opinion. I mean companies like Stallion, Lucchese, Tony Lama, etc… use the finest materials. Their boots are all handmade. They all have a process of hundreds of steps that go into making every single pair of boots. So how in the world can you say Lucchese is rated higher than Rios of Mercedes? In my opinion you really can’t. At least not when you are talking about the top tier quality brands.
Now I will say that brands like Rios or Lucchese are definitely rated better than a pair of Tecovas or Ariat boots. It’s really not even close and I’ve talked about this in an article that I’ve written: Tecovas Boots Vs. Name Brand Cowboy Boots- Here Is What We’ve Found.
There are the top tier cowboy boots which you can find in the reviews I listed above and their are cheap cowboy boots (which also have some reviews above) and I guess you can tell which ones are “rated better” than others. But hey, maybe you are looking for a cheap pair and they will suit you needs. That is why we have listed some on this site.
Boot Reviews That Have You In Mind
These are some of the best cowboy boot reviews out there if you ask me.
Don’t forget the 3 things to look for as I stated earlier when buying a pair of cowboy boots. Make sure it has a Goodyear welt or a welt where a cobbler can replace the sole easily. I also definitely recommend a cowhide leather lined pair of cowboy boots over cloth lined. Last but not least, make sure they are hand lasted. Your quality brands like Lucchese, Stallion, Rios of Mercedes, etc… are all going to be hand lasted for sure.
The above mentioned boot makers uses time-honored craftsmanship techniques to build handmade boots of unrivaled fit, comfort, and style. Because of their hand-lasted nature, each of these brands boots will differ slightly. With more wear, the leather on the boots molds to the contours of the foot, personalizing both boot and fit to every wearer. This is the reason why I only get handmade boots from brands such as these.
I hope this list of the best cowboy boot reviews has helped you not only gain some knowledge on what to look for when getting a pair of boots, but also helped you find your new favorite pair of handmade cowboy boots!
